Hand Marbled Silk and Paper
The art of marbling comes from ancient times and places. It is thought to have originated in either Turkey or Persia in the 1100's. Marbled paper was used often for decorative purposes. You may have seen an old fine book, usually bound in leather with insides covered in hand marbled paper.
I think this is a fascinating art form. I used to teach art at the high school level and every year we would make hand marbled paper. The students loved this art form because it didn't require that they understand color theory and they didn't need to be able to draw! They didn't need to understand color theory because when the paints are applied to a surface, unlike most paint, the colors do not run together and make mud.
Below you will find two galleries of marbling. The first is hand marbled silk scarves, the second is hand marbled paper. On the home page you can see just two ideas for what you might do with the paper.
